GOTT IM HIMMEL!

Germans crash out – and in Britain there’s not a dry eye in the house!!

- From Christian Gysin in Kaliningrad

IT was the perfect result for England fans… and their team didn’t even play.

Defending champions Germany crashed out of the World Cup last night – failing to make it past the group stages for the first time in 80 years.

The news was met with delight by England fans, who have so often been disappointed at major tournaments as their team has bowed out at the hands of the Germans.

Minutes after relative minnows South Korea recorded their surprise 2-0 win, fans preparing for the Three Lions’ game in Kaliningrad tonight gave their verdicts.

Peter Campbell, 48, from Gravesend in Kent, told the Daily Mail: ‘I think the phrase is “Auf Wiedersehen”, isn’t it.

‘They have broken our hearts so many times in major tournaments but now it is their time to get an early flight home … I am loving it.’

David Wimborne, 54, who is from Cambridge and was in Kaliningrad for the game, said: ‘Who would have bet on that result?

‘I cannot remember the last time the German team messed up like that. South Korea rode their luck – but the Germans are out and I could not happier.’

Many England fans back in the UK could not contain themselves after the shock exit, with scores tweeting, ‘Auf Wiedersehen’ – German for goodbye.

The Germans – who have won the World Cup four times – peppered the South Korean goal throughout the match but failed to score thanks to a combination of blocks and heroic saves from goalkeeper Cho Hyun-Woo.

They were caught out in the dying minutes of the game when Kim Young-Gwon managed to flick the ball into the back of the net two minutes into injury time.

The goal was initially ruled offside but the decision was overturned after a video review.

Four minutes later Son Heung-Min slotted the ball into an empty net from close range after German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer roamed deep into South Korea’s half.

Germany lost their opening game 1-0 to Mexico and appeared to be heading out as they trailed Sweden in their next group game – until a last-minute goal drew them level.

Yesterday’s loss meant Germany fell to the bottom of their group and left the competition in the opening stages for the first time since 1938. It is the third consecutive time the holders of the World Cup have been knocked out in the group stages.

The shock result came eight years to the day that Germany knocked England out of the 2010 World Cup.

As the final whistle blew, German fans who had made the journey to Kazan were seen in tears.

The official account of the German national team tweeted: ‘ As much as it hurts to bow out this early, congratulations to #SWE and #MEX. We wish you good luck in the knockouts.’

German defender Mats Hummels said the early exit was ‘really bitter’. ‘The situation is very difficult to put into words,’ he told German broadcaster ZDF.

Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman simply tweeted: ‘How sad!’

The Koreans finished third in the Group F table and Germany came fourth. Winners Sweden and second-placed Mexico have gone through to the last 16.
