The Earl Spencer

-

The Daily Mail has agreed to settle a legal claim brought by earl Spencer about an item in a column on 14 January 2017. The column said that earl Spencer turned down Princess Diana by refusing to give her accommodation on his estate after her marriage collapsed in 1992 implying unbrotherly behaviour towards his late sister. In fact, while the earl declined Princess Diana’s request for a property known as the Garden house, he did offer her alternative properties including Wormleighton Manor and others on the wider Althorp estate. The paper has made a joint statement in open court which accepted that the allegation was defamatory and untrue. It has also apologised to earl Spencer and agreed to pay damages and his legal costs.
