Another empty scare
ANOTHER day, another anti-Brexit scare exploded – this time by the scrupulously neutral National Audit Office. For months, Remoaners and EU negotiators have warned that a no- deal Brexit will cause huge delays at Britain’s ports. But not so, says the NAO.
In fact, HMRC is on track to install IT systems before March, ensuring smooth customs clearance – deal or no deal.
The Chancellor should be reassuring firms, instead of urging them to say they’ll leave the UK unless a deal is reached. In highlighting Mr Hammond’s rank disloyalty, backbencher Jacob Rees-Mogg spoke for millions. SINKING to new depths of selfdelusion, Tony Blair says it’s a ‘huge myth’ that he allowed unbridled immigration. This will come as a surprise to the people of London, where his legacy is a foreign-born population approaching 40 per cent (and, yes, of course, many of them make a valuable contribution). But isn’t it interesting that Blair has now joined Sir Nick Clegg and others in suggesting uncontrolled migration may not be such a good idea after all? This paper remembers decades in which we were a lone voice, making the same point – only to be attacked by the likes of Messrs Blair and Clegg!
