£200m seized from ex-PM in Malaysia

-

MORE than £200million worth of money and luxury items were seized in police raids on homes linked to former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak, officials revealed yesterday.

It took three days and 22 officials using six moneycounting machines to add up the amount of cash taken from the 64-year-old’s properties.

The police and an anti-corruption agency are investigating claims Mr Najib is linked to billions of pounds worth of Malaysian currency that has gone missing from a state fund known as 1MDB, which he founded.

Mr Najib has been prevented from leaving the country after he unexpectedly lost a general election last month.

Amar Singh, from Malaysia’s national police force, said 12,000 pieces of jewellery had been recovered. He added that it was the largest seizure of money and goods in Malaysian history.
