Mail veteran of 40 years dies at 73

HUGH Dawson, the Daily Mail’s former chief sub-editor who spent more than 40 years at the newspaper, has died at the age of 73.

Mr Dawson joined the Mail in 1968 and oversaw the paper’s transition from hot metal to the computeris­ed system used today, before retiring in 2010.

Two years ago, Mr Dawson was diagnosed with motor neurone disease and died on Sunday following a lengthy battle, surrounded by his family at home in Central London.

He leaves behind his wife, Sandra, children Sally and Steven and six grandchild­ren.
