Bin protest drives off selfish commuters
IT was a dawn raid on inconsiderate drivers – and the weapon of choice for homeowners was the wheelie bin.
Fed- up residents lined their kerbsides with the bins in an attempt to make workers leave their cars somewhere else.
They claim the cars block pavements – forcing children and mothers with prams to walk on the road – create blind spots and stop friends and family visiting.
They also say their own cars are often boxed into their drives for up to 14 hours by the inconsiderate drivers.
So yesterday, in the early hours, they lined seven streets in Hulme, near Manchester city centre, with rubbish and recycling bins.
Households in the St George’s area say the drivers are leaving the cars to avoid city centre parking charges. Resident Guy Neild said: ‘In this street on a week day, the cars are parked bumper to bumper, yet only three belong to people who live on this street.’
Manchester City Council said it was aware of the parking problems and was looking into ways to help the residents.
