Who stole my bike by Stealers Wheel!

THE year was 1974 and I was in the air force, posted to RAF Gan — a station on an island in the Maldives — for nine months. We ran our own radio station for the 400 airmen there and I was a DJ doing a ‘Letters from Home’ programme on a Sunday morning. One Saturday night, I was in one of the island’s bars having a drink, and left the letters from home in an old box attached to the bicycle I used to get around the island. I intended to prepare the programme by getting in early on the Sunday morning. Unfortunately, someone ‘borrowed’ the bike I’d left outside the bar. In the morning I broadcast that there would be no programme unless the bike was delivered to the radio station before the programme was due to start. Fortunately, it did turn up 20 minutes before the show and I hastily collected the records requested from our library. With no time for preparation, I went on the air with the opening dedication Stuck In The Middle With You by Stealers Wheel! RAF Gan closed in 1976. The island is now a holiday resort called Equator Village.
