WhatsApp chats cheer Spurs stars

- MATT BARLOW reports from Sochi

DAVINSON SANCHEZ has revealed how the Tottenham stars at the World Cup are keeping in touch via a WhatsApp group. Son Heung-min reported how his phone buzzed with messages of congratulation from Spurs team-mates when his goal helped South Korea send Germany home early from Russia. And, when Sanchez was asked about the prospect of marking his Tottenham colleague Harry Kane when England and Colombia meet in Moscow on Tuesday, he said: ‘I haven’t spoken with him but we have a WhatsApp group. We send congratulations when anyone scores. ‘We’re buddies. I’m happy for him because Harry is in a great moment. He has shown year after year he can score goals and set up goals for team-mates. ‘He is one of the reference points at Tottenham. In the World Cup, we know he can make the difference. ‘We try to focus on our team. One player can score goals and win matches but an entire team working together as a unit is more dangerous than any single player. ‘If I play against him, I’ll do my best to stop him. Anything is possible.’ Sanchez is thrilled to be facing England in the last 16 with the Colombians gathering momentum, losing to Japan but winning their final two games to top Group H. ‘Being from the Premier League, I’m going to prefer England,’ said the 22-year-old centre half, who moved to London from Ajax last summer. ‘Even teams who don’t have much chance have brought a lot to the tournament and that’s made it difficult for the teams who could go all the way. ‘It gives you confidence when you get a result and you need confidence. We’re a team with a lot of character. Anything we achieve from here is a triumph.’ Colombia will be cheered on by more than 22,000 colourful and passionate fans who have travelled to Russia. ‘Most of us understand football bears fruit when you do it with passion and love,’ said Sanchez. ‘Our entire country celebrate every goal as if it’s our last.’
