Kids could sue parents over online selfies, says UN boss

- By Eleanor Hayward

PARENTS who post pictures of their children on social media could be breaching their human rights, the United Nations has warned.

UN special rapporteur Joseph Cannataci suggested many more children could sue parents for infringing their human rights by posting photos of them on sites such as Facebook and YouTube.

Mr Cannataci said: ‘How do you deal with parents who insist in taking a video of their kids every single day and posting it on YouTube every single day?

‘We have already seen the first cases of kids suing their parents because of the stuff they post on Facebook about them.

‘We could be looking even further towards what rights they have vis a vis their parents’ rights to disseminate information about them.’

At a press conference after a two-week visit to Britain, he called for more research to protect the privacy rights of children whose parents share photos of them on social media without permission.

Mr Cannataci said some nurseries installed CCTV to monitor children in order to reassure anxious parents but what British children needed was ‘increased protection’ from companies collecting their data.
