Johanna is busy practising her dab hand in the kitchen
WHEN it comes to practising, it seems Johanna Konta spends almost as much time in the kitchen as on the courts.
The British No 1, who has become famous for her love of baking had revealed that she has been honing a number of recipes in the build-up to Wimbledon.
The 27-year-old first discussed her fondness for baking as a way of coping with the stresses of the tournament last year as she battled to the semi-final.
After winning her first round match on Tuesday, Miss Konta said she was going home to cook a raspberry and elderflower traybake. Yesterday she was seen offering her cakes to her team on Wimbledon’s practice courts. Her preparation for this year’s tournament involved making her first ever pavlova, flavoured with strawberry, mint and elderflower.
‘It looked unbelievable. It also tasted really good,’ she said. ‘It was the first time I ever had meringue. I kept looking to my boyfriend, Is it good? He said it was.’
Her most tricky task will be a promised bake for former world No 1 Novak Djokovic, who follows a highly restrictive gluten-free diet. ‘He’s no sugar, no dairy, but I can do alternatives,’ she said.
Miss Konta, who says she would love to be a contestant on The Great British Bake Off and even sent of an application for this year’s series, faces Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia today.
