Mother, 92, shoots son who wanted to put her in a home

- Mail Foreign Service

A WOMAN of 92 shot her 72-year-old son dead over his plan to put her in a care home.

Anna Mae Blessing was arrested on suspicion of murder at the home they shared.

According to court documents she had been worried for days about her son’s intentions to put her into care.

‘You took my life, so I’m taking yours,’ she reportedly said as she was taken out of the property in Phoenix, Arizona. She was living there with her son and his 57year-old girlfriend.

Mrs Blessing told police she had hidden two handguns in the pockets of her bathrobe and confronted her son in his bedroom, hitting him with multiple rounds. She said she tried to shoot his girlfriend too, but the woman was able to wrestle the weapons away.

As she was arrested she told detectives she had confronted her son over his intentions to put her in a care home.

Mrs Blessing’s son, whose name has not been released, apparently wanted her to leave because she ‘had become difficult to live with’.

Police found him dead with two bullet wounds to his neck and jaw. Mrs Blessing was in a reclining chair in her bedroom.

She told officers she deserved to be ‘put to sleep’ for her actions and had intended to take her own life too. She did not enter a plea during a brief initial court appearance and it was not immediately clear whether she had any legal representation.
