IN 1904, an ill-informed German writer described England as ‘a land without music’, ignoring the nation’s centuries-old musical tradition. This ignorant remark did have one good effect — it galvanised music collectors to travel the land, writing down and recording the ancient songs of England before they died out. In the first of the two-part series THE SONG HUNTERS (RADIO 4, 11.30AM), singer and song collector Sam Lee hears how these early enthusiast­s carefully copied out the words and music of traditiona­l songs.
