Nurse is bailed in baby deaths case
A NURSE arrested on suspicion of the murder of eight babies was bailed by police yesterday but has been barred from returning to work.
Lucy Letby, 28, was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of murdering eight babies and attempting to murder six more at the neonatal unit in Chester where she worked.
Police said their investigation of the deaths and nonfatal collapses of 32 babies at Countess of Chester Hospital was ‘very much ongoing’.
The release of the nurse, described as ‘geeky’ and dedicated by friends, came as forensics teams continued to search her £180,000 semidetached house in Chester.
A hospital spokesman said: ‘The member of staff involved will not be returning to work while this matter is ongoing.’ Police have been investigating how babies died or fell ill from March 2015 to July 2016 after being asked by hospital bosses when a report highlighted concerns at the unit.
Since her arrest, Liverpool Women’s Hospital, where Miss Letby did a placement during her training, has also begun its own investigation.
