Trump has EU in sights over Nato spending

-

DONALD Trump last night blasted EU leaders over Nato defence spending.

His social media outburst came as Theresa May is expected to announce the deployment of an extra 440 British troops to Afghanistan at a crunch Nato summit in Brussels today.

He tweeted: ‘The US is spending many times more than any other country in order to protect them. Not fair to the US taxpayer. On top of that we lose $151Billion on Trade with the European Union. Charge us big Tariffs (& Barriers)! NATO countries must pay MORE, the United States must pay LESS. Very Unfair!’

‘Many countries in NATO, which we are expected to defend, are not only short of their current commitment of 2% (which is low), but are also delinquent for many years in payments. Will they reimburse the U.S.?’

At today’s summit, Mrs May will defend the UK’s spending and join calls for EU countries to spend more. After the summit Mr Trump will travel to the UK and then to Helsinki for talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The deployment of 440 soldiers from the Welsh Guards will significantly increase the UK’s commitment at the Nato mission in Afghanistan, bringing the total to around 1,100.
