Taxing retirement

THE number of pensioners paying income tax in retirement has almost doubled in 20 years — from 3.32 million in the mid-Nineties to 6.49 million in 2015-16, according to the insurer Royal London. Retirees paid £24 billion a year to the taxman in 2015-16. The surge is thought to be partly down to rising numbers working into retirement.
