AN EYE TO THE FUTURE

-

I sometimes wish that I possessed A magic telescope To view whate’er the future holds in store. The way we’ll live and all that’s changed Be that for good or ill, In fifty or a hundred years or more. Will I see Utopia, That place where health and wealth And happiness are everyone’s estate? Will I spot ‘Love thy neighbour’ Ensconced in every heart, With no room left for fear or pain or hate? Will I see barren, plundered lands Where every arid shore Is bounded by a stale, polluted sea? With closely guarded sanctuaries For bird and beast and flower, So folk might view the way things used to be? Will I see devastation, caused By scarlet buttons pressed? The legacy of this great human race, Striving for supremacy, No matter what the cost? Is Earth left spinning aimlessly in space?
