IT’S NOT EVEN SHOT IN GREECE

-

FOR the first film, bosses chose the Greek island of Skopelos, a boon for the idyllic little island in the western Aegean.

But the second time round, they chose the Croatian island of Vis, a rugged spot two-anda-half hours from the mainland, which served as a base for the Yugoslav army until 1989.

Since it only has one hotel, the stars stayed on yachts or in villas in the island’s main settlement, Vis town. At one point, 500 cast and crew were in the

town. For filming, a waterside restaurant was turned into a taverna and a Croatian pizzeria into a village market.

To the dismay of Greek tourism bosses, attractive tax breaks are thought to have proved irresistible to the filmmakers.

The film is in good company — the TV series Game Of Thrones was filmed in Croatia, as was the movie Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Greek locals joined the first Mamma Mia as extras and were paid £55 a day. This time, a casting call went out for Croatians with a ‘Mediterranean’ look.
