Save RAF Scampton

-

HoW typical of the Government to mark the RAF’s 100th anniversary and the 75th anniversary of the Dambusters’ raid by announcing the closure of RAF scampton (Mail).

It’s the airfield associated with 617 squadron, the Dambusters, and home of the Red Arrows for more than 20 years.

What’s going to happen to the grave of Guy Gibson’s dog, where poppies, treats and toys are left by visitors?

PAT FEARN, Bridgend. I WAs a member of 617 squadron at RAF scampton in the sixties when we flew vulcan B1s.

We used to joke that the Russians could find the airfield with an AA map — just follow the famously straight Roman road, the A15, north from lincoln and when you get to the bulge, that’s the end of the extended runway.

there was a letter pinned up in our crew room from an irate farmer who complained our vulcans flew so low over his farm that he could hear them change gear.

BOB MITCHELL, Birmingham.
