We are living in the age of hopeless snail mail

-

THANK the Lord for emails and text messages! On my local postbox, the notice of the 5.30pm last collection time has been replaced by one stating that the day’s only collection is at 9am. For many months, it was rumoured to be between 9.30am and 11.30am. This postbox serves many flats, shops and businesses. At 5.30pm, you used to be able to set your watch by the mail van’s arrival. Now, with postal deliveries arriving at any time up to noon (if you’re lucky), there is no possibility of replying to correspondence on the day of receipt. The tag telling you the day of the next collection frequently shows any day of the week other than today. Royal Mail chief executive Rico Back needs to spend more than one day a week in the UK to see the service being delivered to the public who finance his ridiculous multi-million-pound remuneration package.

D. LLOYD, London SW3. WHY can a public company be sold off without strict conditions on how the service is to be maintained? The longdistance transport of mail via lorries rather than rail is not necessarily economic. For a Royal Mail chief executive on a vast salary to live in Switzerland is ludicrous. We have seen postal services eroded to one collection a day, confusion over collection times and haphazard deliveries. RAYMOND WALKER, Wilmslow, Cheshire. WHY all the fuss about the new Royal Mail boss living in Switzerland? The business was sold on behalf of the taxpayers by the then Business Secretary Vince Cable for a pittance and it’s now a private company.

BRIAN BEST, High Wycombe, Bucks.
