Would you give up your seat for a pregnant woman?

-

WHY have men stopped offering pregnant women a seat (Femail)? This is down to a general lack of good manners. Rarely do you receive a ‘thank you’ if you do something nice for someone. The other day in a shop, I made way for a heavily pregnant woman pushing a pram and she didn’t even look at me, let alone thank me. C. LEWIS, Menai Bridge, Anglesey.

AS A child of the Fifties, I was raised to be respectful to others, regardless of gender. Holding doors open and offering my seat on the bus or train is second nature. However, the feminist brigade are so intent on making an issue out of whatever they perceive to be a slight to their gender that such actions are as likely to bring about abuse as they are to be welcomed. I witnessed a young man offering a pregnant woman his seat on the bus. She refused his offer by ranting that pregnancy is not a disability. KEITH ELLIOTT, Sheffield, S. Yorks. MEN not giving up their seats for pregnant women is nothing new. In 1968, two weeks before I gave birth, I got on a bus where every seat had been taken by City gents on their way to work. When they saw me, they buried their heads in their newspapers. Chivalry was already dead. Equality has nothing to do with it. J. LITTLEY, Chislehurst, Kent. WHEN I offered my seat on the bus to a middle-aged woman, she said: ‘Do you think I am old and past it?’ I haven’t bothered since. C. SIMPSON, Worthing, W. Sussex. I AM elderly, but still sprightly. Travelling in London, I was impressed and thankful when people immediately offered me their seat on the Tube. K. MOTT, Goring-by-Sea, W. Sussex.
