BRIDGE MASTERCLASS

- PETER DONOVAN

You are West in 6 ♠ and require all but one of the remaining tricks, with the lead in dummy. (North bid 3 ♥ during the auction). tHis is the full five-card ending of yesterday’s deal. then, you correctly worked out that North would have no better than ♣ K x and consequently played a club to the ace and exited with a small club to endplay North.

this line fails when surprisingly south has ♣ K and North has a singleton. the 100 per cent line is to avoid playing clubs at all.

instead of ruffing dummy’s last heart, you use it as your endplay card. Lead ♥ 7 and discard a club. You know North has to win and he’ll then have to lead clubs himself or give you a ruff and discard.
