Shopper saves baby in baking car

-

A SHOPPER saved a baby left in a car in 31C (88F) heat after a security guard apparently refused to break into the vehicle for fear of losing his job.

Jenna Langston, 33, forced the boot of the baking car open when she saw the three-month-old ‘dripping in sweat’.

She claimed the staff told her they could not do anything until police arrived at the Asda store in Barnes Hill, Birmingham.

Miss Langston said: ‘The guard said, “we can’t help you do that, I could lose my job”. All the doors were locked and none of the windows were open. I forced the boot and he was dripping with sweat. There was still no sign of the driver – it had been 50 minutes by now. Then she appeared. I asked what she had been thinking. But she just looked at the floor.’

The baby was taken to hospital for checks after the shocking incident last Thursday.

West Midlands Police said: ‘The parent of the baby has been spoken to.’

Asda said: ‘We would never punish a colleague for trying to do the right thing.’

It came as four people, including a girl of six, drowned during last week’s heatwave. The girl, from Erith, Kent, was pulled from the water at Margate on Saturday. The others died earlier in the week.
