Should home of the Red Arrows be scrapped?

-

WE ARE celebrating the 100th anniversary of the RAF and the Ministry of Defence has announced it wants to sell off our nation’s heritage, RAF Scampton (Mail). It’s the home of the Red Arrows and Bomber Command flew the Dambusters raid from this airfield, where brave young air crews fought and died to save Britain. Is this how we are going to remember them, with a building site for unaffordable houses?

GERALD NATHANSON, Chigwell, Essex. WE STOPPED sending Lancaster bombers to bomb Germany more than 70 years ago, therefore RAF Scampton is no longer needed. I am sure the aircrew who died would not regret its passing, but would be gratified to see the peace that ensued due to the work of the EU.

COLIN HAYWARD, Fareham, Hants.

IF WESTMINSTER wants to save millions, instead of scrapping RAF Scampton, it could slash overseas aid, go for a No Deal Brexit with no divorce bill to pay and abolish the House of Lords.

JOHN ROOKES, Rotherham, S. Yorks. I AM horrified that the home of the Red Arrows is to be closed to save money. In a country that struggles under a high tax system and has been burdened with austerity for years, why are we so short of money? I can’t imagine many other countries destroying their history. The ridiculous and expensive HS2 scheme should be scrapped and the money saved used to preserve this historic airfield.

WENDY PARKER, Solihull, W. Mids.

SO THE Red Arrows need a new home. How about Manston Airport in Thanet, famous for its long runway.

PAT FERRETT, Ramsgate, Kent.
