The 8ft escaped python that slithered up a toilet … and into a blind man’s shower

- By Tom Payne

WRAPPED around a shower, an 8ft escaped python lies in wait having slithered up through a lavatory.

Most of us would probably scream in horror if we were confronted with this terrifying sight.

But Stuart Saunders, who is blind, was unfortunately none the wiser – and he tried to pick it up several times, thinking it was a roll of insulation.

The 60-year-old, from Exeter, was listening to music when he heard crashing sounds coming from his bathroom on Sunday night and went to investigate.

He said: ‘Things began falling. I thought the wind from the window may have blown them over.

‘A toothbrush and glass, a bottle of bleach and shampoo had all fallen down. When I picked them up, I noticed this thing on the floor, like insulation had come up.’

Eventually, his support worker burst into the room and told him the intruder was a giant snake.

They rang police but it was staff from a nearby pet shop, Exeter Exotics, who came over to catch it.

‘It left the bathroom in an awful mess with gunge on the wall. The whole bathroom has to be deep cleaned,’ said Mr Saunders. ‘I’ve never touched a snake before that I can remember. It was curled around the toilet and around the shower.

‘That’s why everything was being knocked over.

‘ It’s lucky I wasn’t in there showering.’

Exeter Exotics is looking after the escaped python and appealing for its owner to come forward.

Pythons are one of the largest types of snake. They are non-venomous and kill their prey by squeezing them to death before swallowing them in one piece.
