Return of the dad trainer! Adidas brings back classics

-

ADIDAS is to relaunch a series of styles from the Eighties and Nineties to tap in to the trend for retro fashions.

The German sports firm, which yesterday reported a 20pc rise in profits to £529m, is bringing back so called ‘Dad trainers’ – which are chunky, more oldfashioned shoes.

Among these lines are the Falcon trainer for women, and the Continental shoe ( pictured). Another is the Stan Smith, named after the US tennis player.

Adidas chief executive Kasper Rorsted, said: ‘I was recently having dinner with Stan Smith in New York, who we’ve had a contract with since 1973, and he said “a lot of people don’t know who I am, they think I’m dead”. The kids are driving the trend, we’re just following the kids.’

He added: ‘The newest trend you’re seeing on the High Street is the mock-ups or the new models from what we had in the 90s. Clunky shoes are now coming in, which aren’t to everybody’s taste, but that’s the new taste so that will continue to evolve.’
