Battling Waring seals first win

-

ENGLAND’S Paul Waring won his first European Tour title on his 200th start with a nerve-wracking play-off victory in the Scandinavian Masters in Gothenburg. Waring, 33, had held a two-shot lead with four holes to play. But on the last, South Africa’s Thomas Aiken made birdie to force extra holes. However, when they returned to the 18th for the sudden-death play-off, Aiken drove into the water. Waring’s par sealed the £225,000 prize. ‘I wasn’t ever sure this day would come in total honesty,’ Waring said. ‘I’m ecstatic. I’ve tried so hard for many years to get to this point and it’s nice to finally get across the line. It wasn’t easy. I felt really in control though. ‘
