Yes, he’s good... but not yet in Shearer’s class

- MY VERDICT CHRIS SUTTON

SERGIO AGUERO’S latest hattrick is his ninth in the Premier League, just two short of Alan Shearer’s alltime record. There is every chance that Aguero will snatch that from my former strike partner before the end of the season. But is he better than Shearer? I don’t think so. I see the same mental strength in both men that you need to be a great Premier League striker. Every time I have watched Aguero, he has been greedy for goals. Whenever he misses a chance, it makes him even more determined to score and that is how Alan would be. A couple of seasons ago it looked like Gabriel Jesus had edged Aguero out of the team. He responded by getting even fitter and sharper and has proved to Pep Guardiola why he should still be Manchester City’s main man. But what sets Shearer apart from the rest are his remarkable numbers. Aguero’s haul against Huddersfield took him to 146 goals in 208 games — a seriously impressive return of 0.7 goals per game. After the same number of matches, Shearer had 148 goals and a total of 10 hat-tricks. Imagine how many more he could have had playing with an abundance of creative geniuses such as Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Leroy Sane? Aguero will certainly go down as one of the Premier League’s greatest strikers. For me, Shearer is still the undisputed No1.
