I’ve still got it... even as a veteran!

- By PETER CROUCH

I WAS really pleased with the goal. It’s one of the best headers I’ve scored. I’ve had loads of people saying to me it came off the back of your head but I meant to flick it in! What else was I trying to do? I wanted to make a difference when I came on at Preston. you always hope to do something straight away, so to get my head on to Joe Allen’s freekick with just about my first touch was tremendous. every striker is impatient at the beginning of each season to get off the mark and I’m relieved to have got the tally moving in the right direction. I hope it will be the first of many. Obviously, my happiness was tempered by the fact we only got a point at Deepdale and are still awaiting our first win but I’m confident that will change soon. Only after the match did I appreciate the significance of the goal and I’m proud to have joined the 200 club. It was interesting, too, when I read how people have started describing me in reports. This week, the preferred term seemed to be ‘veteran’, which I quite liked. Put it this way, it was certainly better than ‘ageing’ which I’d got the week before! So long as I keep being called ‘striker’, I’ll be happy.
