I’ve got no problem with Salford’s cash, good luck to them
SALFORD CITY.....3 CHESTERFIELD...2
THERE was some pleasure taken by some in our league that Salford City — bankrolled by a Singaporean multi-millionaire and owned by some of Manchester United’s greatest players — had a slow start this season. Their playing budget is something like £4million. Let’s just say that’s not in our league. They snapped up a couple of players I would have liked, early in the window. But I don’t go along with the criticism they’ve had. If you’ve got money, spend it, see how you go, and good luck with the expectation because in the non-league money gives you far fewer certainties. You need contacts — a way of tapping into the grapevine for players who know what the lower leagues and non-league are about. You need the ability to make sure that every one of them would run through a hedge for the rest. For me that is just as valuable as me getting my tactics right. The same applies at the top, too. Look at Manchester United — all that money spent and they’re not the best because they’re so obviously an unhappy team. It was a disappointing 3-2 defeat for us at Salford on Saturday but I felt we were the better team. We’ll live without that £4m.
