Pep in frantic hunt for No 2 after Bravo injury

- By SAMI MOKBEL

MANCHESTER CITy launched a frantic worldwide search yesterday for a back-up goalkeeper after Claudio Bravo was hurt in training.

The achilles tendon injury suffered by the Chilean has left Pep Guardiola with only one fit senior goalkeeper — first-choice Ederson.

The injury to Bravo, who could be ruled out for the season, follows Guardiola’s decision to let keepers Joe Hart and Angus Gunn leave this summer.

Any injury or suspension to Ederson would leave City facing the risky prospect of fielding academy graduate Daniel Grimshaw, 20, who is yet to make his professional debut. Aro Muric is on loan at Dutch club NAC Breda but reports in Holland last night indicated City do not have a recall clause.

City cannot sign a goalkeeper or take one on loan until January. They could consider applying for special dispensation to sign an understudy, but it is unlikely to be granted.

Despite the transfer window being closed, clubs can still sign out-of-contract players.

Among the goalkeepers available are Diego Cavalieri, formerly of Liverpool and Crystal Palace, and Stuart Taylor, who spent three years with City before leaving in 2012.

Bravo’s injury comes a week after Kevin De Bruyne was ruled out for three months with knee ligament damage.
