Four in ten Jews ‘could leave UK if the Labour leader becomes PM’

- By Ian Drury Home Affairs Editor

NEArLy four in ten British Jews would ‘seriously consider’ emigrating if Jeremy Corbyn wins power, a survey found.

As many as 115,000 are thinking of quitting the uK because of the scale of anti-Semitism under Labour, according to a poll for the Jewish Chronicle newspaper.

The contingency planning comes after former Chief rabbi Lord Sacks warned at the weekend that Mr Corbyn had contributed to Jews openly questioning whether Britain was still a safe place to raise their children.

On Tuesday, Labour’s ruling National Executive Committee finally agreed to accept in full the internationally recognised definition of anti-Semitism in its code of conduct after a summer of controversy. But Mr Corbyn was criticised after he tried – but failed – to issue a separate statement arguing it was not antiSemitic to describe israel as racist.

Labour has been engulfed in claims of antiSemitism under Mr Corbyn’s three-year stewardship following a spate of attacks on Jewish people and supporters, including MPs. MPs yesterday heard how a dramatic surge in anti-Semitic attacks has ‘a close correlation’ with Labour crisis.

Dave rich, of the Community Action Trust – which campaigns against anti-Semitism – told the Commons women and equalities committee the rise in recorded incidents began in spring 2016 – when Ken Livingstone faced censure over comments on israel.

Attacks on Jewish people, which include violence, verbal abuse and desecration of property, have hit record levels – rising 5 per cent on 2016 to 1,414 last year.

Laura Marks, chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, told the same hearing that Jews in Britain felt unhappier now than at any point in recent years.

The Jewish Chronicle poll found 38.5 per cent of Jews would ‘seriously consider’ leaving the uK if Mr Corbyn became Prime Minister – up from 11 per cent in January 2015, nine months before he won the leadership.
