Elec­tric car de­mand

One in twelve driv­ers are opt­ing to go elec­tric when they buy new cars, fig­ures show.

de­mand for hy­brid and full- elec­tric cars surged 88.7pc in Au­gust, push­ing the mar­ket share of the ve­hi­cles to a record 8pc.

Al­most 7,500 of the cars were reg­is­tered, up from 4,000 dur­ing the same month a year ago, ac­cord­ing to the so­ci­ety of Mo­tor Man­u­fac­tur­ers and Traders (sMMT). Over­all, more than 94,000 new cars were reg­is­tered in Au­gust.

Mike Hawes, sMMT chief ex­ec­u­tive, said: ‘It’s great to see such strong growth, par­tic­u­larly in the im­por­tant elec­tric ve­hi­cle mar­ket.’
