Officers did nothing for a month ... but I found jewel thieves in 40mins

- By Claire Duffin

A JEWELLER turned detective to track down two shoplifters after police failed to act for nearly a month.

John Easom uploaded his CCTV to Facebook after weeks of reporting the theft and waiting for officers to collect it.

Within 40 minutes of it going online, several members of the public had come forward and he was given names and ages for both of the suspects.

The theft took place at lunchtime on August 8. One man asked to try on a £750 gold bracelet, then a second man came up and snatched it out of his hands.

Mr Easom believes the two men were acting together after a witness claimed he saw them talking to each other around the corner minutes before.

The suspects are believed to be known drug users and shoplifters in the area. Mr Easom, who has run Gold Bank jewellers in Nottingham for two years, said police finally visited on Wednesday.

Mr Easom said: ‘I don’t want people to think they can rob us and there are no consequences. The police have not handled the investigation at all. It was a £750 loss and we don’t want that and the incident shook up my staff.’

Chief Inspector Donna Lawton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: ‘We grade our response to incidents based on threat, risk and harm. Whilst our initial grading was correct, we should have acted more quickly when we were informed of further evidence available.’

Last night, a 35-year-old man was being questioned by police about the theft.
