SOMeTIMeS it’s clear that older people, in particular, need help. how can concerned relatives approach the issue tactfully?

Duncan Smith, a Caremark franchisee, who provides home care services in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, says: ‘First, discreetly ask other relatives and friends if they have noticed the same issues, as their support could be valuable — but never “gang up” on your loved one or talk about them as if they are not in the room.’

If you agree that care could help, Duncan says: ‘Broach the subject with them early on — don’t wait until the issue or illness is unmanageable. Keep calm, reassure them.’

he suggests asking questions designed to stimulate a conversation, such as: ‘It’s getting a bit harder now to make lunch isn’t it?’ and ‘Are you missing being able to get out and about as much?’.

he recommends, on the other hand, avoiding confrontational words and phrases, such as, ‘You’re always forgetting things, it’s a nightmare’, or, ‘I’m worried you’ll get hurt or lost’. These phrases can cause feelings of guilt and possibly denial.

‘have the discussion early in the day, give them time to take it in, and ensure they will not be left alone immediately afterwards to work themselves into a panic,’ he says. ‘Be prepared for a “no” — but this could just mean “not now”.’
