Yes, it’s really Keeley! Bodyguard star’s first shot at fame

- By Susie Coen and Faye White

THE heavy-lidded, brown eyes look familiar, and you’ve definitely seen that smile before.

Any ideas? Look closer at this elfin 17- year- old and you may recognise Keeley Hawes, star of the hit BBC series Bodyguard.

She had been spotted by a scout for the Select Agency in Oxford Street and here she is starting her career modelling for teen magazine Shout in 1993.

Sporting an androgynous pixie cut and wearing a red unitard, she shows readers how to do ‘simple workouts for lazybones’.

Elsewhere, photos of her are used to illustrate a problem page article about girls’ periods, for which she pouts while clutching a teddy bear hot water bottle.

In another shoot, which will probably have her teenage sons and daughter cringing with embarrassment, the budding actress ‘snogs’ a boy for an article advising readers on whether ‘he is really the boy for you’.

The advice given includes warnings such as ‘he’s good looking and charming, but let’s face it, he could win “Flirt of the Year” without really trying’.

Another shoot with the magazine is about her relationship with her older brother Jamie. He revealed that she used to make him go to one particular market stall in London so she could ‘stare’ at a boy she fancied. But he described her as a strong woman, saying she ‘never really needs sticking up for! She’s perfectly capable of looking out for herself’.

A series of swimwear shots also demonstrate just how kind time has been to Miss Hawes, now 42. After two marriages and three children – one of whom is 19 – she still has that enviably slim figure.

Twenty-five years on, viewers are waiting to see whether her character, Home Secretary Julia Montague, really died when a bomb was detonated as she gave a speech.

The finale of the Jed Mercurio series, which drew in 8.1million viewers last week, airs on Sunday on BBC1 at 9pm.
