8 in 10 Tory voters ‘want May gone before election’

-

THERESA May suffered a fresh blow yesterday as a poll revealed eight in ten Tory voters want her gone before the next general election, expected to be in 2022.

The survey for the Conservative Home website highlights the Prime Minister’s unpopularity among grassroots activists.

Meanwhile, a former Tory leader claimed she was only safe ‘for the next few months’ and could be toppled by spring. Michael Howard said Mrs May’s tenure depended on striking a successful Brexit deal, then persuading Parliament to back it – a prospect he described as being against ‘all the odds’.

His comments will be seen by Number 10 as an act of treachery.

The poll found that 35 per cent of respondents believed that the premier should quit now, with 45 per cent saying she should step down before the next election – a total of 80 per cent.
