Should so many sports stars be honoured with knighthoods?

-

I agree with Tony adams that our World Cup ‘stars’ should not be knighted. The england team achieved little. They progressed against very poor opposition. Manager gareth Southgate’s method was boring in the extreme, passing the ball sideways and backwards until they inevitably lost possession. The ability of most of the england squad wouldn’t get them into the teams of any of the better national sides. Harry Kane won the golden Boot, with six goals. Three of those were penalties and one hit his leg and went in almost without his knowing anything about it. He must surely have been embarrassed when he collected his award. Why is there an obsession with knighting sportsmen and women when, in the main, they are overpaid for doing what they chose to do? Why should you be knighted for kicking a football, rowing a boat or running in a race? It’s

as farcical as giving knighthoods to actors. Mike Wright, reading, Berks.

DAVID BECKHAM, you were caught speeding at 19mph more than the limit, but rather than do the honourable thing you chose to hire a legal professional to get you off on a technicality. The ordinary person in the street would have had to pay a fine and get points on their licence as they could not afford to be defended by ‘Mr Loophole’. Another reason why you should never be knighted. The law needs to be changed so that nobody can evade penalties this way.

John newman, ashington, northumberland. IF David Beckham still thinks he’s entitled to a knighthood, then it’s definitely a long shot missing the goal.

THE vastly overrated England manager Gareth Southgate and and striker Harry Kane should be knighted — for what? Beating Tunisia in the last minute and Colombia by the fairground beat-the-goalie nonsense. If they hadn’t won a penalty shoot-out for the first time since the Big Bang occurred, they’d have been slated, and quite rightly so. No wonder some people revile English sporting arrogance.

Jim Adamson,

Cupar, Fife. David Beckham, potential knight of the realm? surely you’ve got to be joking. Then again, perhaps he’ll get his legal team on to the situation now they’re free after helping him to successfully swerve a speeding fine.
