New citizenship test will focus on British values
MIGRANTS will have to pass a new ‘British values test’ to become a UK citizen after Sajid Javid criticised the current exam as a ‘pub quiz’.
It will replace the Life In The UK test for those looking to settle in the country. That test poses 24 multiple choice questions about British traditions and customs.
But the Home Secretary said the test was ‘not enough’ – and unveiled proposals to ask migrants questions about tolerance, fairness and women’s rights instead. He said an understanding and appreciation of these values was ‘vital to integration and playing a full part in national life’.
Exact questions have not yet been published but practice sets include: Which stories are associated with Geoffrey Chaucer?; how often does Prime Minister’s Questions occur when Parliament is sitting?; and what is the name of the UK currency?
Mr Javid said yesterday: ‘It’s about integration, not segregation. It’s about signing up to those values that we share and live by together.’
