Alan Titchmarsh, who is on intimate terms with the Royal Family, is appalled by the lack of deference towards the monarchy. ‘I was at an event where there were men with hats on during the National Anthem. I was telling this to somebody of my age — and they laughed at me for worrying about something so inconsequential. The attitude is: “It doesn’t really matter.” Well, it does to me. It leads to larger things not mattering.’
