YOU HAVE YOUR SAY

-

EVERY week Money Mail receives hundreds of your letters and emails about our stories. Here are some from our article last week about leaseholders who can’t afford the freehold of their homes . . .

THE house I own was originally a leasehold. My neighbours still pay £200 a year for their lease. I tell them to buy it — at £2,000 but I suppose it’s easier to pay £200 every 12 months than shell out £2,000 outright. I just hope the lease isn’t sold on.

NOT everyone is contract savvy. Legal documents can be daunting and most people expect a certain level of decency when dealing with these companies. We should be sympathetic to these innocent occupants.

T.S., Kent.

A LEASEHOLD charge is a scam. Imagine if every time you bought a car there was a clause saying you have to pay the seller, say £20 a year, for as long as you own it? I don’t understand how housebuilders can get away with such a practice.

B.F., Stockport.

NEVER, ever, use the solicitor recommended by the housebuilder. It’s always better to appoint an experienced conveyancer who will work for you. Educate yourself, read everything thoroughly and make sure you understand the small print.
