Is David Davis to blame for Brexit failures?

-

PETER OBORNE was unfair in his criticism of David Davis for failing to get a deal with the EU (Mail). There was never going to be an early deal. Davis had to bide his time because he was in a no-win situation due to the hostility to Brexit from parts of the media and Remainer MPs. He was undermined by Theresa May, who pushed Remainer Olly Robbins into a senior position, destroying his credibility. Don’t put all the blame on David Davis. People in the UK will know who to blame if there is No Deal. MIKE EDWARDS, Nantwich, Cheshire.

THE criticism of David Davis and Boris Johnson is justified. Here we have two Neros fiddling while Rome burns. Would both be happy to see the UK in flames if they could use this as a justification to pursue their personal ambitions? The Brexit debate seems to involve only Theresa May, Davis, Johnson and DUP leader Arlene Foster. Why not consult John Major, Michael Heseltine, Ken Clarke, Norman Lamont and Nigel Lawson, who have proven track records?

R. HAVENHAND, Cheshire. I TAKE exception to Peter Oborne’s allegation of treachery by David Davis. Of course he resigned, and so would you if you were being told what to say, when to say it and how to say it — particularly if you knew it was all disingenuous. Would you follow a leader heading for disaster without trying to alter their direction? It looks as if Theresa May’s self-appointed sycophants will do just that.

J. COLES, Orpington, Gtr London. AT LAST, someone prepared to say what most of us feel is true. David Davis has thrown us all — especially Theresa May — under the bus.

STEWART IMLACH, Leicester.
