A NEW and even more-than- ordinary detestable type of German soldier is appearing with increasing frequency, chiefly in the so- called ‘Hermann Goring regiments’. These are boys of 16 or 17, some of whom have been captured carrying Hitler Youth membership cards. Allied interrogat­ing officers agree these devotees of Hitler’s hate cult are the most poisonous type of German that they have encountere­d.

PRINCESS Margaret (pictured) went to an animal farm today in Tanganyika to collect two baby zebra presented to her. Governor Sir Edward Twining asked: ‘Where would you like the zebras sent, Ma’am?’ The Princess replied: ‘Oh, just send them to my London home.’

OM PURI (1950-2017). The Indian actor starred in East Is East, Gandhi and Charlie Wilson’s War as well as a string of Bollywood hits and on TV in The Jewel In The Crown. He said offers of roles in Uk films petered out after he was awarded an honorary OBE for services to British cinema in 2005: ‘I thought that was a golden handshake — “We [have] had enough of you, here is your prize, now get lost!” ’ PETER BOYLE (1935-2006). The star of U.S. sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond was most famous for playing the monster in Mel Brooks’s film Young Frankenste­in. He met wife-to-be Loraine, a journalist, while on set in the monster’s full make-up. John Lennon was best man at their wedding.
