Russia warns of danger as Trump scraps nuclear pact
DONALD Trump’s decision to quit a key nuclear arms pact will ‘make the world a more dangerous place,’ Russia warned yesterday
It threatened to ‘restore balance’ if America begins to develop new weapons.
The move came as US National Security Adviser John Bolton held talks in Moscow.
America faced international condemnation after Mr Trump said he wanted to withdraw from the treaty. French President Emmanuel Macron phoned the US leader and China said it was wrong to pull out of the treaty unilaterally.
The 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty prohibits the US and Russia from possessing, producing or test-flying a ground-launched cruise missile with a range of 300 to 3,400 miles. America claimed that Russia has violated the treaty.
But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov insisted: ‘Russia is and has been devoted to the clauses of the agreement.’ He stressed: ‘The intention of the US to withdraw... can make the world a more dangerous place.’
