WHAT’S IN IT?
We reveal the ingredients in everyday products
This week: sudocrem
ZINC OXIDE: The main active ingredient, this is a natural antibacterial that aids in soothing and protecting the skin.
LIQUID PARAFFIN: This is a form of mineral oil that helps to retain the skin’s moisture by leaving a layer of oil on the surface, preventing water from evaporating.
SODIUM BENZOATE: This is known by the E number E211 and acts as a preservative. It was also used in soft drinks in the UK until it was phased out about a decade ago and replaced by potassium sorbate. BUTYLATED HYDROXYANISOLE: Another preservative, research has shown that this can be harmful and potentially carcinogenic (cancer-causing) if consumed.
SORBITAN SESQUIOLEATE: This is an emulsifier, meaning that it helps the water and oils in the cream to mix together. It can then form a protective, moisturising layer over the skin.
