NHS is a national treasure
WE HEAR so many dreadful stories about the NHS, especially the way old people are treated. I am pleased to say that my experience has been very different.
I am 86 and until June was extremely active, caring for my 91year- old housebound, disabled husband and walking my beloved King Charles spaniel, Poppy.
But late one Sunday night she saw a cat and chased it, wrapping her lead around my legs, pulling me over and breaking my leg.
Yes, I was on a trolley until I was operated on, but I wasn’t left for a moment. Nurses, doctors, the surgeon and an anaesthetist all kept their eye on me.
I spent a month in hospital and can’t praise highly enough the attention, help and consideration I received from the wonderful Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. Even the food was good!
I was sent home with all the medical apparatus and gadgets I needed and, after physiotherapy, I am walking unaided. I have even started taking Poppy for a walk again.
I am indebted to the wonderful NHS — the ambulance and hospital staff all deserve medals. BRENDA HELEN SHILLING,
Nottingham.
