Farewill’s head of legal, Lorraine Robinson, on why will writing has to move with the times

-

MANY people have a vision of wills only being for old people, or they might think they don’t have enough value to warrant doing one. Often, thinking about death and not being with loved ones is enough to paralyse people into inaction and put it off. But will writing doesn’t have to be a painful, stuffy, time-consuming process any more. Legal services haven’t been the quickest to move with the times and a lot of law firms haven’t changed how they’re attracting and servicing their customers.

Historically wills haven't been considered a priority, so some firms don’t put the time towards them that they could. If they can’t be bothered, is it no wonder that 60 per cent* of the population can’t be bothered either to get their will sorted?

At Farewill, we really wanted to address this by being more approachable and streamlining everything online. That makes the process of writing a will less of a hassle, less expensive and less intimidating.

With Farewill, writing a will is not just an exercise in legal compliance; it can be more personalised, too.

We make sure our customers’ wills are legally compliant, but our customers are also given the opportunity to include personal messages to their loved ones, too, alongside the legal terms.

By getting our customers more emotionally engaged in the process, they’re motivated to see the process through and share their most personal information with us.

Knowing our customers is key to making a good will for them, so when customers trust us and share that information with us, it makes their will better, and protects their wishes.

At Farewill, we want to change the way the nation deals with death.

We know people do want to take care of things and the people they love after they’re gone, but they didn’t used to have great options to do this.

Now they can, at any time, from the comfort of their own homes, without having to visit a solicitor’s office during traditional office hours, and without spending a fortune. At Farewill, death doesn’t have to be daunting. Lorraine is an in-house solicitor and head of legal at Farewill.
