Honoured by Queen, their movie Mercury
IN aN era known for outlandish and decadent rock groups, they were perhaps the most flamboyant band of all.
So the premiere of a film about Queen was hardly likely to be understated. and naturally the screening of Bohemian rhapsody took place last night at the scene of their most famous performance.
Two of the band joined cast members at Wembley, venue for the 1985 live aid charity concert.
alongside Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer roger Taylor on the red carpet was rami Malek, who had the tough task of playing the late Freddie Mercury. Malek, 37, looked suitably rock and roll in a crisp white suit and black shirt while May, 71, wore a trendy black jacket with a satin red collar and loose-fitting black trousers.
The guitarist was joined by his wife anita Dobson, 69. The former eastenders actress dazzled in a sparkling sliver mini-dress.
Taylor, all in black, was joined by his wife Sarina Potgieter, who wore an elegant strapless black dress.
Queen’s long-time manager Jim Beach said: ‘Freddie was such an extraordinary performer and the whole world loved him, he deserved his own film.’ Beach praised the Bohemian rhapsody cast - Malek, gwilym lee as May, Ben Hardy as Taylor and Joseph Mazzello as bassist John Deacon – as being ‘at the top of the tree’.
The film has been mired in controversy and fans questioned whether it would gloss over Mercury’s bisexuality and aids diagnosis.
But Malek has promised that the film doesn’t shy away from portraying the singer accurately. ‘He’s a very, very naughty boy at times,’ he said. ‘and you’d be doing a disservice to him if you didn’t portray that.’
Bohemian rhapsody is in uK cinemas mas from today.
