Motor giants scolded over high-speed commercials

- By Sean Poulter Consumer Affairs Editor

CAR giants have been found guilty of breaking marketing rules by using commercials involving high speeds and reckless driving to promote their vehicles.

Ford, Nissan and the FiatChrysler groups have been banned from running the commercials on the grounds they are irresponsible.

A Fiat-Chrysler ad on YouTube featured a race between four of its latest models. They were seen speeding along a spiralling and tilting track between high-rise buildings.

A television advert for Nissan showed one of its cars veering into the left-hand lane before taking a sharp turn into an airport and quickly stopping as a man appeared in front of the car.

Text on the screen suggested the driver and pedestrian had been saved by the car’s ‘Intelligent Emergency Braking’.

Two ads for the Ford Mustang sports car on YouTube and at the cinema focused on the thrill of driving.

The Advertising Standards Authority ruled that all the commercials broke industry rules, which are designed to promote safe driving.
