Branching out, the poppy tree tribute for war dead
IT’S a striking tribute to our war dead. A ‘poppy tree’ put up outside a shopping centre yesterday has already attracted much comment.
Jon Osgood, manager of the Old George Mall in Salisbury, said he hoped the Remembrance Day tribute would ‘not only inspire people to donate to the Royal British Legion, but to learn more about the war’.
One Twitter user said: ‘I kind of like it, both a symbol of death and sacrifice, as well as a symbol of life, growth and hope.’
The Salisbury Business Improvement District, which represents city centre traders, said the tree was ‘looking fantastic’. Tom Sykes added: ‘It’s fab! Anything that tastefully remembers our brave solders has my blessing.’
Salisbury wasn’t the only place to have a poppy tree – one has also been seen in Gloucester Cathedral.
