CSKA fans injured after Rome escalator collapses

- By KATE McGREAVY

AS MANY as 30 CSKA Moscow fans were injured on their way to last night’s Champions League tie against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico when an escalator gave way at the Repubblica station. A video of the incident showed a packed escalator suddenly speed up, sending people hurtling down the stairs and piling up behind one another at the bottom. Supporters on the opposite, ascending escalator leaned over to help fans on the broken system, pulling them to safety on to the section between the two escalators. Pictures posted online in the immediate aftermath showed how the metal plates at the bottom of the escalator were twisted by the force of the impact. Reports suggested that 30 people were injured, with seven seriously hurt. The majority of these are believed to be Russian supporters. Emergency services were quickly on the scene and the station was closed.
